Snoring is No Laughing Matter

Snoring It is often the subject of humour, distress, divorce and debate. It can test even the strongest relationship. Have you notices that the person who snores the loudest always falls asleep first.

This is a very common problem and it can have adverse affects on our mood, our health and disrupting sleep for you and your loved one.
The following conditions can affect the airway and cause snoring:
  • Your mouth anatomy. Having a low, thick soft palate can narrow your airway. …
  • Alcohol consumption. Snoring can also be brought on by consuming too much alcohol before bedtime. …
  • Nasal problems. …
  • Sleep deprivation. …
  • Sleep position.

There are many old wives tales to “cure” snoring. Sew tennis balls into the back of your top is a notable one. While this may sound absurd, the thinking behind it makes sense as you wont lie on your back with tennis balls digging into you. This position is most prevalent in creating the snoring sound.

Top Ten Old Wives Tales

a)      Sew a pocket in the back of your pyjamas and insert a tennis ball

b)      Drink a mug of hot milk before bed to coat the throat

c)      Eat a teaspoon of horseradish  to clear the nasal passages

d)     Gargle with garlic crushed in hot water

e)      Dr Flacks phonetic exercises to strengthen the muscles in upper airway

f)       Place a pan of hot water by bedside of the snorer to humidify the air

g)      Suck a dummy to keep the mouth closed

h)      Toothpaste on the nostrils

i)        When your partner snores rub their upper lip

j)        Sleep without a pillow

Castle Street Dental can not verify any of these treatments! 😀

The Science of Snoring

Snoring happens when you can’t move air freely through your nose and throat during sleep. This makes the surrounding tissues vibrate, which produces the familiar snoring sound. People who snore often have too much throat and nasal tissue or “floppy” tissue that is more prone to vibrate.

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This means the brain — and the rest of the body — may not get enough oxygen. Please speak to your GP if you think this may be an issue for you.

So what can a Dentist do for snoring i hear you ask.

We at Castle Street Dental have had great success in the last 3 years treating patients for snoring. Patients that meet the criteria can be prescribed a Tap Device to wear at night.

The TAP® is part of the TAP family of appliances for the treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)* Must be assessed by a sleep specialist prior to treatment by us. Based on the same principle as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the TAP (Thornton Adjustable Positioner) was designed to keep the airway open to allow for air to pass. A constricted or collapsed airway causes snoring and OSA. The TAP device holds the lower jaw in a forward position, maintaining a clear airway to reduce snoring and improve breathing.

sleep-apnea-oral-device

Each TAP device consists of an upper and lower tray that fit over the teeth. On the TAP, a hook mechanism attached to the upper tray fits into a socket attached to the lower tray and positions the lower jaw forward. Three hook sizes offer increased range of adjustment. An adjustment key enables the patient to adjust the protrusion of the lower jaw while wearing the device until a comfortable and effective position is achieved.

Anti-Snore Wearable

by Sleep.ai

About 70% of all people only snore when they sleep on their back. Moving to your side opens the airway. Our app detects snoring sounds and sends a signal to the Anti Snore Wearable, making it vibrate. You turn over to your side and the snoring stops.

Sleep

This is valued at $99.00 and can be purchased here on amazon.

This has been tested by members of our Staff we won’t say who!! 😉

“I knew i was a grinder but i honestly didn’t think i snored. The App gives great insight to your sleep patterns. I put on the arm band as directed and off i went to sleep. I vaguely remember wakening and looking at my arm as the disc in the arm band had vibrated i just rolled over and went back to sleep. So it wasn’t a big inconvenience. I found my results interesting and it was funny to actually hear me snoring on the recording!!” Anon Staff Member

What is your Hygiene Status?

Periodontal Disease

Healthy Gums V Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease, under diagnosed and ignored by many. So many people disregard the symptoms. Bleeding , red, puffy gums, bad breath, bad taste in their mouth and tooth mobility. Often people only seek help when its too late. Healthy teeth are lost because of low bone levels. This in itself is a huge problem but what so many people don’t realise is that there is a link to your general health.

It is now clinically proven that inflammation caused by periodontal disease can affect your systemic health. The relationship between gum diseases and systemic conditions now extend beyond Heart disease and includes diabetes, respiratory disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Meds

It is recommended that you visit your Dentist at the very least once a year. From there your periodontal health can be assessed and managed.

Here at Castle Street Dental we tailor our patients care. Every patient is different, their needs are different and we recognise that.

We have devised a new periodontal diagnosis program that will see you the patient more educated about your treatment and more involved in changing your periodontal status. We have colour coded the different grades of Periodontal disease. Over the course of your treatment we want to help you improve your status, save your teeth and lower the risk factors associated with oral and systemic health.

So take control of your health one step at a time. Improve your oral hygiene at home, visit your dentist and establish your plan. Stick to the recommended visits as direct by the Dentist and Hygienist and help minimise your risk.

T&C’s

Boutique Whitening is a home whitening system using custom made trays and tooth whitening gel which is 16% Carbamide Peroxide.

What is the process for home tooth whitening?

Your dentist will take some impressions of your teeth and from that they will have some whitening trays made. These are very similar to a traditional gum shield but less bulky.

You will then be given the whitening trays and some tooth whitening gel, your dentist will show you how to place the tooth whitening gel in the trays.

It is important that you do not overload the trays with the whitening solution as this can damage your gums.

Over a two week period your dentist will recommend you do the following

For 14 – 21 days you will wear your trays correctly loaded with the recommended gel for 1 hours per day.

These instructions may vary from patient to patient but your dentist will give you a full instruction sheet if you decide to go ahead with the treatment.

How successful is Tooth Whitening?

The results can vary from patient to patient but the average patient is normally happy with the result of the treatment after a two to three week period.

For the long term success of tooth whitening we would recommend that the treatment is repeated every six months for up to two and a half years.

This “top up” treatment should take no more than four to five days.

What are the benefits of Tooth Whitening?

Tooth whitening improves the appearance of your teeth without removing any of the natural tooth surfaces. It is a less tooth destructive option than a crown or veneer if you want to lighten the colour of healthy teeth.

When is tooth whitening not recommended?

We recommend that tooth whitening is not carried out during pregnancy and breast feeding.

Tooth whitening will not alter the colour of crowns veneers and fillings.

What are the costs?

The normal cost of tooth whitening at the present time is €300 for both upper and lower teeth.

For a limited time only get a whiter brighter smile for €150!!

The cost of a 1 x 3ml syringe “top up” is €30 including the appointment with the dentist who will need to prescribe it. ( LIMITED TIME ONLY…. Buy 4 x 3ml syringes for €80)

If this is a treatment you are interested in please call our patient care team on 0505 23000 and they will be able to help. We offer a FREE initial consultation* where we can assess whether you are suitable for the treatment.
